I’ve been cautiously optimistic about the American remake of the unspeakably awesome Swedish vampire movie Let the Right One In (which I have somehow managed to not review yet on this site – I’ll get right on that!). On the plus side, it’s got a great cast (Chloe Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Cara Buono), a solid director (Matt Reeves – sorry, haters, but Cloverfield was pretty amazing) and a commitment from the filmmakers not to fuck up the original concept too badly as they dumb it down for our stoopid Amurikin braenz.
On the downside, it’s a remake.
Well, the trailer for the remake is up, and I’m very happy to say that it looks to preserve many of the scarring images of the original film without tampering too much with its focus and tone.
Check it out after the jump and let us know what you think!
Eli Eli oxen free!

As a big fan of the original, I really hope they stick to their promise to not fuck it up. The trailer is very similar to the original, so that gives me hope. And the fact that it was just as spooky/eerie/heebie-jeebie inspiring can only be a good sign, right?
I also really love the morse code at the end of the trailer. I feel if you haven’t seen the original (or read the book, which is also awesome), you don’t know the significance… but if you have, it only makes it creepier. Bring it on!!
SO far, so good.
But then, it’sthe trailer’s job to not look like they fucked up, so I remain cautious. But I really, really want it to be good, because both the book and the original movie are awesome, and this is a story that DESERVES to be seen by a wider audience.
YES. You nailed it exactly. Looks awesome, but I remain cautious as well. Let’s hope it lives up to its source material…
Fingers crossed, here!
You’ve got another cautious reader here. It just irritates me that to get folks to watch a really good movie, they have to remake it in English. Why can’t they just watch the original? It was fantastically creepy. I didn’t realize there was a book…I’ll have to read that.
Do read the book – it’s verrrrrrry interesting. I’m already wondering if the American version will address the more, uh, “trantastical” elements of the book, which the Swedish version barely touched on…
I’m think the american version will stay far away from the subject, but to be fair, I didn’t miss it in the original movie either. Also, I think the movie did a great thing by not explaining much about Hakan’s origins, thus opening the possibility that he might be an “earlier Oskar” to Eli.
I saw the original and thought it was an amazing, interesting, horrific and brillant movie! I really hope the U.S. version doesnt suck!
I saw the director at a Horror Director’s Panel at the South by Southwest film festival. I have his scent. As a fellow WereKitteh, I promise to track him down if the movie sinks to a certain level of suck.
The trailer looked somewhat promising though. I wonder why they changed the title?
I can’t wait!
I loved the Swedish movie. I bet this version will be more graphic.
Excuse me, but what does “Trantastical” mean?
