Celebuzz has gotten a hold of the first pics of Johnny Depp as dandy vampire Barnabus Collins in Tim Burton‘s big-screen Dark Shadows adaptation, and they’re pretty hilarious.
Certainly a departure from Jonathan Frid‘s original Barnabus, who was a tad more understated. While I like the emerald green trench and fedora, I think he needs to ease up on the makeup and sideburn gel. If he’s not careful he may be mistaken for Depp’s Willy Wonka or Mad Hatter. Or maybe Lisa Stansfield.
t/y to Hush Firefly for the tip!!

Just awful. Vampires are supposed to be sexy, not whatever that is. And I had such high hopes. It is Johnny Depp after all.
I love Johnny Depp. I love Tim Burton. But I’m becoming more disapppinted with each new collaboration.
I long to see Johnny play a stright role (not quirky) again.
Oh dear. Like so many others, I had high hopes. And now they seem doomed to be smashed like so many teacups.
Tim Burton is just not an understated storyteller. I think it is too caricature-like to see Barnabas this way when you compare who he is standing next to who is not as heavily made up. The real question is why is there sunlight in this scene? Is it some way that they’re filming it to make it look like moonlight?
I’m actually wondering if the makeup might be deliberately overstated because of some day-for-night thing that they’re doing with the filming. Fingers crossed, anyway!
Boo! That is NOT Barnabas. He looks like he started to put zinc oxide on his nose and got carried away. Jonathan Frid’s Barnabas did wear some make-up that could look ghoulish (or vampirish, if you will) in certain lighting, but at least he looked within the range of normal human skin tone and looks. This dude looks like The Joker. (or Liza Minelli).
Just … boo!!
I totally agree! It does look more like the Jack Nicholson’s Joker than the sinister dark nature of Jonathan Frid’s Barnabas. Very disappointed … but that won’t stop me from going to see it when it opens.
You’re welcome? I think :s
I always try and give Burton the benefit of the doubt but…. I don’t know. Mainly the makeup that’s bothering me, too cartoonish and… repetitive?
What I really want to know is why Burton isn’t focusing on getting that Beetlejuice remake(WHY?) pulled instead!

Hush,
That was funny.
Maybe they are shooting in black and white, which means using different make-up techniques. hopefully?? fingers crossed cause that doesn’t look good..yikes.
After the travesty that was “Alice In Wonderland,” Tim Burton is going to have to work hard to get me back on his good side. I too, am sick of Johnny Depp doing so many goofy roles nowadays. He used to have great taste in roles. He should work with Jim Jarmusch again, or Lars Von Trier.
I thought it was Nick Rhodes (keyboard player from Duran Duran)!? This looks way to candid. Let’s all just take a chill pill and wait for a trailer or something.
Johnny looks to cartoonish; he looks like V in Vendetta! I personally liked the 90′s remake of Dark Shadows, with Joanna Going and Ben Cross. Why does everything Johnny and Tim have to be like a gothic cartoon-like world.
The fact that there’s a hand in the photo intrigues me. Is it really a candid shot? Were this a true “Dark Shadows” remake, the hand would appear in the actual film. Actors would flub their lines, props would fall over, doors would fail to close, boom mikes, cameras, and crew member would dart in and out of frame. THAT is the DS I know and love, in all it’s campy, mistake-filled, Ed Woodian glory.
“Were this a true “Dark Shadows” remake, the hand would appear in the actual film.”
Maybe it’s Count Petofi’s hand.
That’s scarey for all the wrong reasons. I keep thinking Lisa Marie Presley and the late Michael Jackson.
I am excited to see ‘Dark Shadows.’ I think it’s just that Johnny is in the sun, and vampire makeup doesn’t look right in direct sun. This is how I will keep my sanity.
I thought Johnny Depp was channeling Michael Jackson for these photos.
Hopefully, the “make-up” is so Barnabus can go out in the day (with zinc oxide protecting from those nasty sun rays.) That might also explain the goggles (or whatever the hell they are.)
I’m beginning to thing Depp and Burton should be maintained on different continents for both their own goods (and careers.)
I realize that they might be using special make up effects and filters for the camera, but considering Barnabas is supposed to look JUST like the painting in Collinwood, so much so that it’s startling, and therefore he claims to be a direct descendant, this is once again Burton just going too far with his own touches. Blasphemer.
These comments are making me laugh so hard that my stomach hurts and my eyes are tearing. I agree with just about everybody. The Barnabus does Liza is so hysterically true. I’m sick of Johnny doing weird caricature roles, too. His natural face already has all the makings of a beautiful vampire. All he would need is make up to lighten his skin…THAT’S ALL! And the Mad Hatter got on my last nerve.
I think Johnny Depp is channeling Madonna channeling Michael Jackson…
